Coach Kenyon here, at your service!
Before I retired, I wore a lot of hats. Now I am wearing only one – my favorite.
What I have missed most is coaching people – watching people grow is one of my favorite pastimes. That’s probably why I love this video so much!
By coaching, I don’t mean
- Sports – I may have been captain of my college championship water ski team – but that was 50 years ago and my teammates were kind to this skinny, bossy water carrier
- Business coaching – Others can help you grow your business or ministry; I’m here to help you grow you as a leader or scholar
- Spiritual direction – we’ll talk spiritual, but spiritual directors have a separate, wonderful role
- Directing – I leave that to your boss – or bosses if you are crazy enough to have multiple
- Mediation – we may talk through issues you are facing and what you can do about them, but there are other people gifted in coming between you and whoever else to sort stuff out
- Therapy – there are some great healers out there finely tuned for such a critical task
These days there are all kinds of coaches.
Q. So what kind of coach am I?
I’m a leadership/ministry coach who loves
- Helping a new nonprofit leader get their bearings
- Working with a ministry or nonprofit leader transition up to the next level or grow in their leadership abilities
- Taking through with a pastoral leader or team member how to navigate particularly rough rapids in the river of ministry
- Helping someone successfully process into crosscultural mission
- Walking alongside a doctoral student inching toward the dissertation finish line
- Inspiring an intern just starting out to see the big picture
Q: Who do I coach?
- Influencers and advocates
- Nonprofit leaders (execs, directors, and managers)
- Pastors (any level, any size church)
- Cross-cultural/intercultural workers
- Other ministry leaders
- Doctoral students
- People wrestling with a call
Q: What do I do when I coach?
- Listen
- Inspire
- Connect dots
- Nudge
- Help you find your own solutions
- Show you where the path can lead way out ahead
- Offer recommendations, references, and resources
Q: Where will I help you go?
- Running on your own steam
- Resourcing your own methods
- Heading in your own direction
Q: What are my qualifications as a coach?
- Ph.D. (Theological Ethics, Baylor University, 1988)
- Experienced campus pastor, international church pastor, missionary, NGO leader, team leader, nonprofit executive
- Skilled doctoral supervisor, dissertation reader, adjunct professor, guest lecturer
- Authored two books and many blog posts
- Lived in various parts of the US and East Asia
- Launched numerous ministries and nonprofit operations
- Helped many others get to the next level in leadership
- Worked in some very challenging situations
Q: What do others have to say about my coaching?
“I had the privilege of working together with Howard for twelve years at a statewide, Oregon nonprofit. Howard’s investment of time, energy, and care in the lives of teammates brought positive transformation to the workplace and improved the work-life balance for many coworkers.
“He is able to listen carefully to the people he is coaching in order to identify goals and areas for growth. He can then build that information effectively into strategic planning and personal training continuums.
“Howard’s insightful guidance and constructive feedback challenged me to push beyond my limits, pursue my strengths, and embrace new opportunities for leadership development. His valuable experience and genuine, person-centered presence are welcome additions to any coaching context.”

“Dr. Howard is the ideal conversation partner to work with toward PhD level thinking. He has been my sounding board to delve deep into the critical thinking territory practitioner PhD students notoriously struggle to reach.
“No one else in my day-to-day life has the breadth of knowledge to converse at the needed level to examine critically the methods and theories I am testing as a PhD student. He encourages and corrects in a balanced way, respecting and uniquely understanding the limited time available to practitioner-scholars.
“I am confident that his wise counsel will carry well into my post-doc work as he can coach and critique in an array of religious and cultural disciplines.”

Q. When/how do we meet?
- We commit to meeting regularly – weekly, biweekly, monthly, whatever works best for you
- We determine how long we go – I recommend starting with at least 6 sessions (counting the initial), and we can always extend
- We can meet via online digital (e.g., zoom) – unless you happen to be in close driving range to one of my favorite coffee shops (I prefer an Arnold Palmer or hot chocolate; you can drink the coffee)
Q. How much will this cost ?
The kinds of services I am offering usually come at a level that prices out some of the very people I want to help. So, out of the starting gate, I am prioritizing a special discount package that will hopefully put these resources in reach of small to medium sized nonprofit, church, and other ministry staff and leaders. And I’m offering additional discounts for those for whom this offer is still out of reach. Been there, done that, know what it’s like.
- Basic discount package of $300 for six (6) sessions for small to medium sized nonprofit, church, and other ministry staff and leaders
- Additional 40% Pioneer Discount for pastors of churches under 50 in size or for leaders launching or rebooting a nonprofit or ministry
- 50% starving doctoral student discount
- Desperate situation – you can always ask
